![]() In the beginning, mermen were few and far between. The fascination with mermythology began with the ancient Greeks. “The Little Mermaid,” Disney ’senormously successful 1989 animated film, was based on the Hans Christian Andersen story of the same name, and it was turned into a Broadway musical, which even now is still being staged across the country. This year’s Best Picture Oscar winner, Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water,” about a lonely mute woman and a captured amphibious man, is a new take on an old theme. Popular culture is enamored with mermaids. Christmas Christmas Eve Christmas tree early Christianity evergreen evergreens paganism Prince Albert Queen Victoria Saturnalia T.S.Eliot’s timeless meditation on joy, death and life everlasting, in his 1954 poem “The Cultivation of Christmas Trees”: “The child wonders at the Christmas Tree: / Let him continue in the spirit of wonder / At the Feast as an event not accepted as a pretext / So that the glittering rapture, the amazement / Of the first-remembered Christmas Tree /…May not be forgotten.” Many writers have tried to capture the complex feelings that Christmas trees inspire, particularly in children. (His children objected so much to the ban that he eventually gave in.) It didn’t take long for President Franklin Pierce to introduce the first Christmas tree to the White House, in 1853-a practice that every President has honored except Theodore Roosevelt, who in 1902 refused to have a tree on conservationist grounds. Suddenly, every household had to have one for the children to decorate. ![]() ![]() The British upper classes quickly followed suit, but the rest of the country remained aloof until 1848, when the London Illustrated News published a charming picture of Queen Victoria and her family gathered around a large Christmas tree. The Christmas tree remained a northern European tradition until Queen Charlotte, the German-born wife of George III, had one erected for a children’s party at Windsor Castle in 1800. The original baubles that hung on these “paradise trees,” representing the trees in the Garden of Eden, were round wafer breads that symbolized the Eucharist. In Germany, mystery plays were performed on Christmas Eve, traditionally celebrated in the church calendar as the feast day of Adam and Eve. It wasn’t until the late Middle Ages that evergreens received a qualified welcome from the Church, as props in the mystery plays that told the story of Creation. Accordingly, in 572 the Council of Braga banned Christians from participating in the Roman celebration of Saturnalia-a popular winter solstice festival in honor of Saturn, the god of agriculture, that included decking the home with boughs of holly, his sacred symbol. The early Christian fathers were troubled by the possibility that the faithful might identify the Garden of Eden’s trees of life and knowledge, described in the Book of Genesis, with paganism’s divine trees and sacred groves. ![]() By the second millennium B.C., variations of the motif were being carved onto temple walls in Egypt and fashioned into bronze sculptures in southern China. In the ancient Near East, “tree of life” motifs appear on pottery as early as 7000 B.C. Nearly every society has at some point venerated the tree as a symbol of fertility and rebirth, or as a living link between the heavens, the earth and the underworld. Clearly, bringing a tree into the house, especially during winter, taps into something deeply spiritual in the human psyche. We were solidly retro.ĭecorating the Christmas tree remains one of my most treasured memories, and according to the National Christmas Tree Association, the tradition is still thriving in our digital age: In 2017 Americans bought 48.5 million real and artificial Christmas trees. You’ll need lath anchors, as they provide additional support since they hold better on the surface of plaster walls than regular wall anchors do. Unlike drywall anchors, masonry anchors won’t pull out of plaster. These plastic anchors are designed for use in masonry, making them suitable for plaster walls. According to Toolbox Gadgets, there are 10 great stud finders out there that work on plaster walls. The key to hanging a heavy mirror on lath and plaster is choosing the right hardware. These anchors won’t pull out of your wall. To find a wall stud in a plaster wall, use a magnetic stud finder that’s proven to work on this type of wall. ![]() We have one design company that always seems to design mirrors with very thin frames so we use the strainers to carry the weight. Finding a wall stud on plaster walls is tricky because of the inconsistent way that plaster wall is constructed. What I often do is when I install the zbar on the frame, I put a screw at the end of the zbar on the vertical side of the frame, even if I have to drill the holes in the zbar, so that the sides are connected to the top so it's not just the top carrying the load.Īlso, sometimes the mirrors have strainers glued with mastic to them and the zbar is attached to the strainer so that the frame is just trim and is not carrying the load. It has never happened in 48 years, but there is a first time for everything.Ĭlick to expand.I have on a couple of rare occasions used a zbar on the bottom along with the top, but the problem can be, if it isn't positioned perfectly, is it hanging from the top or sitting on the bottom? The one thing that I sometimes worry about when hanging bathroom mirrors, and we do a lot of very large ones, is that someday I'm going to drill into the wall and water will come squirting out. I mark and then see if they're 16" on center or sometimes 24" on center. I have a stud finder and sometimes it works but I often find that using my knuckle and rapping on the wall to "hear" the studs can be even more accurate. When there are 2 of us hanging, we use a small shop vac and hold the nozzle underneath the drill to catch the dust while drilling. We used Zbar and drilled into the mortar between the tiles for the mollys. I have dealt with lath and plaster a couple of times in the past. Not on lath and plaster but on tiled walls. Gently tap the hook and nail into the wall. As a good rule of thumb, wall-hanging techniques that don’t screw into wall studs can hold up to 20 pounds (9 kilos). How Much Weight Can Plaster Walls Hold The amount of weight you can hang on your plaster wall depends on the technique used. Just did 2 like that in two bathrooms in a house a couple of weeks ago. Attach a 1/16-in drill bit to create a pilot hole for the hooks nail. We have hung mirrors that are almost too heavy for two people to lift onto the Zbar. Splitters are great for when the player has crafted a high number of simple parts and wants to split them between Assemblers to create higher-tiered parts. Use Splitters, Mergers, and Wall Mounted Sockets - Splitters and Mergers are a big part of any organized factory because they will allow the player to properly direct crafted parts in different ways. This is particularly useful as the player has to travel further and further away from their main hub area in order to get their hands on different resources. To keep things running smoothly players will instead want to set up trains and drones in Satisfactory that can quickly transport resources around the world. While conveyor belts are perfect for nearby nodes, this form of transporting resources can actually be very slow over longer distances. Set Up Proper Supply Lines - As the player makes it further into the game they will need very efficient supply lines in order to keep up their high demand for resources. The player then just has to direct the resources they need away from their old factory and to the more efficient one. ![]() They can set all of their machines and power sources up how they wish and then wait to activate it until its all put together. While this more chaotic factory is creating things the player can then spend their time working on a much more efficient factory nearby. Instead, it is better to construct a haphazard and kind of chaotic factory at first that will help the player push their way through the first couple of Tiers. Use A Chaotic Factory While Making an Organized One - One of the biggest mistakes that players can make though is attempting to create an organized factory in Satisfactory immediately in the game, which will take players a lot of time in the early hours. Have an Iron, Copper, or Steel part factory or floor. Rather than separating based on resource type, the player should instead separate their areas based on the kinds of parts being crafted. This gets a little more difficult with complicated part types like Steel that require Iron, Copper, and Coal to create. This can get very confusing very fast, so it's best to either build a separate factory or an additional floor for any other Resource types. If the player has a section of their factory that is being used to convert Iron Ore into simple Iron parts then they don't want to toss machines that make Copper parts in there.
